Ensure the spindle is adjusted correctly. If not, drills can penetrate too far into the wood block, adding stress to the bits and the machine. Replace worn or damaged spindles.
Even with CHT, drill bits can clog. Clean bits regularly to prevent buildup.
Dull bits are the #1 cause of quality issues, lost production, and equipment stress. Sharpen during production as needed (from hourly to every few shifts). Stock type drives intervals—recycled and exotic substrates are especially tough on bits.
Set drill depth so it just cuts the bottom sheet—no need to cut deeply into the stick.
Clean and properly lubricate drills to prevent clogging and overheating. CHT helps.
For perfect-bound books, clip wooden clothespins to the drills to add friction and keep adhesive soft—especially useful on coated or laminated paper—reducing clogs.
Use fluted CHT drills when drilling aqueous-coated sheets.
